vada Making South Indian recipes

Making vada is a fun and delicious process. Here’s a recipe for you:

 Ingredients:

- 1 cup urad dal (black gram)

- 1 small onion, finely chopped

- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped

- A few curry leaves, chopped

- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

- Salt to taste

- Oil for deep frying

- Water

Steps:

Soak the Dal

Rinse and soak the urad dal in water for about 4-6 hours.

Grind the Dal

Drain the soaked dal and grind it to a smooth batter. Use minimal water while grinding to get a thick consistency.

Prepare the Batter

Add chopped onions, green chilies, curry leaves, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and salt to the batter. Mix well.

Shape the Vadas

Wet your hands with water, take a small portion of the batter, and shape it into a round vada with a hole in the center (like a doughnut).

Heat the Oil

Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.

Fry the Vadas:

Carefully drop the shaped vadas into the hot oil. Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides. Make sure to fry them in batches and not overcrowd the pan.

Serve

Remove the vadas from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot with coconut chutney and sambar.

Enjoy these crispy, savory treats! Do you like them with a specific kind of chutney, or are you up for trying different variations?
